Mayweather also fighting on March 13

By Dan Rafael - Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao will still compete against each other on March 13, but not in the ring. Instead, they will be duking it out for pay-per-view buys.

Two days after Top Rank's Bob Arum, Pacquiao's promoter, announced plans for Pacquiao to defend his welterweight title against former titlist Joshua Clottey on March 13, Mayweather is making plans to fight on the same night.

While Pacquiao will face Clottey at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, just outside of Dallas -- Arum concluded a deal with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on Sunday -- Mayweather will face an opponent to be determined at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told ESPN.com on Sunday night.

"It's a date Golden Boy has had for a long time and nothing has changed," Schaefer said. "We have been talking to Team Mayweather to see who the opponent will be. I hope to have something to announce in the next few days."

The MGM Grand was supposed to host the Pacquiao-Mayweather megafight before it broke up for good on Friday over a monthlong dispute between the camps on the drug testing protocol for a bout that many believed would be the highest-grossing fight in history.

According to sources, Mayweather's list of potential opponents includes former junior welterweight titlist Paulie Malignaggi and Golden Boy-promoted former lightweight titlist Nate Campbell, both smaller men than Mayweather, as well as former welterweight titlist Kermit Cintron, who is a similar kind of opponent as Clottey is for Pacquiao. There is also a more remote possibility of Mayweather facing junior welterweight titlist Timothy Bradley Jr., who has ties to Showtime, which may not want to let him walk away for a possible fight on rival HBO PPV.

One opponent Mayweather will not be facing is Matthew Hatton, the brother of former junior welterweight champ Ricky Hatton, whom Mayweather knocked out in a 2007 welterweight title fight. Reports in Matthew Hatton's native England indicate that he is under consideration.

However, Schaefer said that is not the case.

"There is absolutely no truth to the rumors about Matthew Hatton. I can't tell you for sure who Floyd will fight, but I can tell you for sure it won't be Matthew Hatton," Schaefer said.

With Pacquiao and Mayweather going their separate ways against lesser opponents on competing pay-per-view cards, HBO, which has broadcast both fighters' biggest bouts on pay-per-view, is in a position where it will have to make a choice on whether it will support one fighter over the other or neither.

The network has been mum on its plans for March 13, although Arum and Schaefer both told ESPN.com that they have spoken to the network about their fights. Arum is also prepared to put on his event as a Top Rank-produced pay-per-view.

It would be highly unusual for there to be pay-per-view cards on the same night featuring major stars in separate bouts, but that is exactly what could happen.

"It is unusual, but what can I do," Schaefer said. "It wasn't Floyd who walked away from the Pacquiao fight. There is nothing I can really say about it. I've had the date [March 13] for a long time. Initially it was for the Bernard Hopkins-Roy Jones fight [which won't come off because Jones was knocked out in a Dec. 2 interim bout]. You know what? It is what it is. I'm not getting excited about it anymore. I am sitting outside having a cigar and [expletive]. It is what it is.

"It's not good. It's not good for Pacquiao to go on that date, which we had for a long time. We had that date, end of story. So it's not good. How can it be good? It's not good for boxing. It's not good for boxing that Pacquiao and Mayweather are not fighting each other. I worked really hard to make that happen and it's not. And I am not belittling Pacquiao's fight with Clottey. It's OK. Hey, we have a piece of [the promotional contract of] Pacquiao. But is it ideal? No it's not. Is it the end of boxing? Is the world collapsing? No it is not. We all have to look to March 14. March 13 will pass and on March 14 boxing will still be there and there will be exciting fights, and nothing will change that."

Schaefer said he was unsure what HBO planned to do, but he hoped it would support Mayweather's bout.

"Nobody wants competing fights. HBO doesn't want it," he said. "Nobody in their clear mind can be happy about Mayweather fighting somebody else or Pacquiao fighting somebody else. But we all have to live with it and accept. I'm a boxing fan too and I am pissed off about what happened. Anyone who says anything different is lying. I wish there had been something I could do about it, so I am very frustrated and disappointed, but Floyd Mayweather will still fight."

If Mayweather wins his March bout, Schaefer said he could next meet Shane Mosley, the welterweight champion (and Golden Boy partner) who first faces Andre Berto in a Jan. 30 unification fight. Before taking the fight with Berto, Mosley spent months trying to land a bout with either Mayweather or Pacquiao.

ROACH SAYS PACQIUAO TO BEGIN TRAINING FOR CLOTTEY TOMORROW

By Ben Thompson - "Manny just came in. He's in great shape and he's coming to start training tomorrow, so instead of Mayweather right now, we gotta switch over to Clottey," stated world-class trainer Freddie Roach as he revealed that pound-for-pound champion Manny Pacquiao will begin training on Monday for his March 13th title defense against Joshua Clottey. Speaking for the first time since the official announcement was made by Top Rank earlier today, Roach, who was still studying tapes on Mayweather just an hour ago, revealed the news to the OnTheGrind Boxing Team moments ago.

"I just changed tapes as we speak," Roach remarked. The world-renowned trainer was holding out hope that the Mayweather bout could still be made, but with Arum reaching an agreement to stage the bout with Cowboys Stadium owner Jerry Jones, Roach has now shifted focus to begin preparing for Clottey. "I just took the Mayweather fights out because it looks like that fight's not on right now. I mean, I was figuring out how he deals with southpaws and he does deal with southpaws a lot differently than he does with right handed fighters and so forth," Roach added as he hinted that a gameplan was already being formulated for Mayweather. "I was seeing what his habits were and what his tendencies are, so I was coming up with the gameplan and we were going to get started on it tomorrow working out."

BOB ARUM: "THAT E-MAIL DOES NOT EXIST!"

By G. Leon - Promoter claims ESPN will issue apology.

Moments after returning from Dallas, Texas Bob Arum informed Boxingtalk.com that Manny Pacquiao will face Joshua Clottey on March 13th. The bout will take place at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas, which can seat over 100,000 people, but will be readjusted to seat around 45,000 for the fight. Arum also informed us that the alleged email Teddy Atlas spoke of on Friday Night fights "does not exist." Arum also stated that ESPN will have to issue an apology for making those remarks without verifying their facts.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. versus Manny Pacquiao: Who’s Bad?

By Mitsuru - The proposed mega fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, Jr scheduled on March 13, 2010 is definitely off owing to disagreements in both camps on the how the contentious and controversial drug testing will be done and what agency will handle it.

Let us look back and answer some issues that contributed as to why the said mega fight went kaput.

Bad Blood

There was bad blood between both sides and they were wary of each other’s intentions and sincerity from the very beginning. It did not bode well that Floyd Mayweather, Jr has a bad history with Bob Arum and so does Manny Pacquiao with Golden Boy Promotions. Add the fact that Pacquiao gave Oscar de la Hoya, GBP’s owner, the beating of his life and turned his pretty face into a punching bag.

Also, Freddie Roach and Pacquiao terribly embarrassed the Floyd Mayweather, Sr- trained Ricky Hatton in just two rounds that made Mayweather, Sr cope out on the Mancunian fighter by blaming him of not listening to his instructions instead of his poor fight plan and strategy.

After these two fights, rumors began to swirl around about Manny Pacquiao’s alleged steroid use without any evidence to show but mainly coming from Mayweather, Sr.’s mouth that was soon picked up by fighters with hidden agenda, some people with an axe to grind, and some media people who are skeptical of Team Pacquiao’s success.

Bad Intentions

Pacquiao shamed Oscar de la Hoya when he made him quit on his stool in the 8th round of their fight that Oscar was predicted to win handily. The Golden Boy’s image was tarnished and he still cannot get over the fact that the last image of him being remembered was of a defeated man sitting forlornly in his corner while Team Pacquiao and the boxing world were celebrating around him.

Oscar de la Hoya’s huge ego was irreversibly pricked when Freddie Roach proved to the whole world that he “can no longer pull the trigger”, and was made worse when Pacquiao made him eat his word. Who can forget what he told Pacquiao during one of the press conferences before the fight, “I will knock you out“?

And after proclaiming to anybody who cared to listen after his surrender that Pacquiao’s punches had no power at all and that he could’ve have stood there all night and Pacquiao would not be able to knock him out, he made a 180 degree turn around and wrote in his blog that, “Now I have to wonder about him. I’m saying to myself. Wow, those Mosley punches, those Vargas punches and those Pacquiao punches all felt the same!”

Thus, we can forgive his conflicting statements since he was on the receiving end of many powerful and wicked blows to the head in his fight with Pacquiao and could have resulted into him not being his old self. Now, we have to wonder if he is the same sane old man that he believe is.

Bad Education

Manny Pacquaio’s accusers lack the necessary smarts to understand the nature of anabolic steroids and human-growth hormones and their functions and effects on the body. They don’t possess the necessary educational attainment to even understand the essence of what they are talking about.

Floyd Mayweather, Sr. who started the ball rolling never finished high school to have even an iota of understanding the basics of what he is accusing Pacquiao of doing. Obviously, Team Mayweather lacks the knowledge to separate the facts from fiction regarding the tests that they are demanding.

First, they asked for blood tests to look for steroids in Manny Pacquiao’s blood. Manny Pacquiao agreed to 3 tests that are not even part of the mandated drug testing by the NSAC, the sole authority in conducting such tests on fighters in the State of Nevada. When told that this could be done through urinalysis, they changed their tune and now added Human- Growth Hormones (hGH) to the lot. While it’s true that hGH can be detected in one’s blood, contrary to popular beliefs hGH can also be detected in the urine by using molecular ‘markers’ to detect its presence in the urine in this day and age.

I will not be surprised if they will raise the EPO- question in the future. This is an obvious witch- hunt that Team Pacquiao did not tolerate. More so, a ludicrous demand coming from a fighter who belittles Manny Pacquiao’s skills and says that he will “whip the Pacman’s punk ass“.

Bad Company

Team Pacquiao is not known to harbor people with questionable characters in their midst . Team Pacquiao has no links to companies with bad reputations. They have not been involved nor linked in any controversies in and out of the ring. Team Pacquiao has no links to laboratories/ companies like BALCO nor to any dirty and unsavory characters both at present and in the past.

Freddie Roach is as straight a shooter as you can get. He is so transparent and speaks his mind out without regard for anything. He is the “what you see is what you get” kind of guy.

Conditioning coach Alex Ariza who admitted that he prepared everything that he gave to Manny Pacquiao himself. He said that if there is any person in the team that should know what goes into Pacquiao’s system, it should be him. His record is impeccable and speaks for itself.

Alex Ariza, who was obviously irritated by the issue, said in an interview -

“I didn’t really do any interviews before this because I didn’t feel it warranted it. But I’ve seen stories like Lou DiBella said that members of Team Pacquiao have a history of steroid use? Show me. Where’s his paperwork that leads to BALCO? I’ve worked with Diego Corrales, Erik Morales, Angel Manfredy. None of those guys has ever even tested for a diuretic, cold medication, antibiotics, nothing. I don’t give any of my fighters that would be considered illegal or a performance enhancing drug. I don’t know where people are coming up that I’m linked to BALCO. I’ve never been associated or questioned about anything.”

As for Team Mayweather, I’ll just give you three names and I believed no further explanations are necessary to put the message across - Floyd Mayweather, Sr., Roger Mayweather and Richard Schaefer.

Bad Reputation

Manny Pacquiao earned the mythical P4P title the hard way. He persevered against the odds and fought his way to the top against worthy and world class opponents. The list of his victims are worthy of Hall of Fame status themselves. He may have been involved in some controversies in the past with regards to his dalliances with show business but his record in and out of the ring when it comes to the sport is spotless. He quietly made his mark and fought the best there is.

On the other hand, Floyd Mayweather, Jr.’s reputation in and out of the ring left something to be desired. His name was mentioned in relation to a shooting incident in a Las Vegas skating rink and his mansion and limo were subjected to a weapons search by authorities. The IRS is after him for several years now and also has several pending cases for foreclosures in court. Recently, he and his entourage were involved in a night club scuffle with a rapper and his crew.

True, Mayweather fought some good fighters like Diego Corrales and Jose Luis Castillo (although he was gifted a win in their first fight) when he was still in the lower weight divisions but as he scaled the weights he was also accused of cherry- picking his opponents to preserve the “0” in his record. His most impressive win in the last 5 years was the 8th round knockout of Ricky Hatton who was fighting out of his natural weight for the first time.

His biggest fight was an unimpressive split decision win over Oscar de la Hoya wherein de la Hoya, learning from his mistakes in the first fight, could have whipped his ass the moment they faced again but he never gave him the rematch. So, that is subject to debate until now.

His comeback fight against a very bloated Juan Manuel Marquez (which earned him the laughable no. 1 P4P ranking over Pacquiao from Yahoo Sports for some time) is nothing spectacular either. It did not sit well to boxing fans that he came out two pounds over the catch weight limit and refused the customary weigh-in again on fight night. Although he showed his vaunted defensive skills in that fight, the fans were dissatisfied when he failed to engage and knockout the smaller Mexican.

While Manny Pacquiao continues to take on all- comers throughout his career, Floyd Mayweather, Jr. fought patsies and second- tier fighters while dancing en route to victory. He conveniently ducked the people who could have challenged his skills and defined him as a fighter. Mosley, Margarito, Cotto and Williams are just some of the names that could have cemented his legacy, but rather than facing them in the ring, he opted to retire.

Bad Mouth

Manny Pacquiao is a soft- spoken person and is not known to bad mouth his opponents. He respects his opponents even if some of his opponents disrespect him. He just smiles at all the trash talk and lets his fist do the talking inside the ring.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. shoots from his mouth without regard for anything. He brags about his ‘greatness’ and trash talks anyone that he wants to or got in his way. Everyone is fair game to him and he will disrespect everyone if it will suit and further his cause.

Consider Floyd mumbo-jumbos on fighting Pacquiao-

“He has to call me out first- he knows he can’t beat me- it will be an easier fight than Marquez- 60-40- I’m the best fighter of all time- God doesn’t want me to lose- I’ll promise I’ll fight Mosley instead”

When Pacquiao called out his bluff, he proposed an unprecedented and unparalleled Olympic- style testing which no boxing commission in the United States uses despite the fact that the Nevada State Athletic Commission has the most sophisticated testing facilities and the most stringent measures in drug testing.

If he thinks Pacquiao will be of no match to him, why be adamant with his senseless demands since he once admitted that he was the bigger man, anyway? Why not just sign the contract and prove that he is the greatest fighter of all time inside the square ring?

Sadly, for all of Floyd Mayweather, Jr.’s pronouncemens, deep inside he is afraid to fight Manny Pacquiao and lose his cherished “0” to the Pacman. For all of his braggadocio, deep inside he is a big coward. Floyd Mayweather, Jr should remember that being a loud-mouth will not gain him respect. He should also take to heart the old saying that “Still water runs deep.”

Arum heading home Sunday evening with a deal from Jerry in Texas for March 13

By Matt Stolow - Top Rank's Bob Arum and Todd duBoef are now en route back to Las Vegas after successfully completing talks Saturday night and Sunday afternoon to bring the Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey fight to Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas Saturday, March 13.

The official press conference will be Monday, January 18 at the stadium and again in New York City Tuesday, January 19.

March 13 is the firm date. Cowboys Stadium has a moto-cross event booked for March 20.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has bought the live gate for the fight but I imagine Top Rank comes back in for an overage at some point. Jones will keep any new sponsorships his staff can scrounge up.

Only 61 days remain until the fight. The event will be scaled to seat 50,000 fans.

The Cowboys will probably first contact almost 80,000 season ticket holders they have as possible ticket buyers.

It is not for certain if HBO PPV will be handle the broadcast or if Top Rank will do it themselves.

I have read unsubstantiated reports of Floyd Mayweather, Jr. also wanting to fight that same night and on pay-per-view but I haven't seen confirmation of this.

I would imagine this is a bluff on Mayweather's behalf to annoy Arum and Pacquiao but anything is possible.

It appears in addition to the Pacquiao vs. Clottey main event, three additional fights will be televised for a total of four for the pay-per-view audience in addition to other non-televised fights.

Roberto Marroquin, a Top Rank (11-0 (8 KO's) left-handed super bantamweight prospect from Dallas will be on the card according to Arum.

Arum wants controversial former World Boxing Council welterweight champion Antonio Margarito to make his comeback from a one year suspension on the card and already has begun the licensing requirement according to Texas' chief boxing inspector Dick Cole.

A final KO for Pacquiao vs Mayweather bout

By Lance Pugmire - The official end of hope for a super-fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. came Sunday when Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum announced he had signed a deal to stage an alternate Pacquiao bout against Joshua Clottey on March 13 at Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Texas.

Arum said Pacquiao will earn somewhere between $10 million and $20 million for the welterweight fight against Clottey (35-3), who lost a split decision to Miguel Cotto in his most recent fight in June.

Cotto later suffered a 12th-round technical knockout loss to Pacquiao in November, as the Filipino star won his record seventh weight-division world title and probably clinched for the second straight time the honor of fighter of the year.

Mayweather's promoter, Richard Schaefer, resigned to the futility of his attempts to resurrect talks of a mega-fight that crashed in a dispute over drug testing, told The Times on Sunday that Mayweather is engaged in "advanced negotiations" with another opponent and also plans to fight March 13 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

HBO will have to decide whether to broadcast the Pacquiao fight or the Mayweather bout on pay-per-view. Arum's company, Top Rank, has previously staged its own pay-per-view cards.

Mayweather (40-0), considered with Pacquiao as one of the top two boxers in the world, is expected to fight New York's Paulie Malignaggi (27-3).

Arum said he doesn't plan to revisit a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight until the fall, after Pacquiao (50-3, with two draws) runs for a congressional seat in the Philippines in May.

The scrapped bout, which would have guaranteed both boxers more than $25 million, also deprives boxing of a major event many fight experts predicted would have received widespread attention in the mainstream sports world.

Mayweather and Pacquiao failed to strike a deal because of their heated dispute over a blood testing protocol for possible performance-enhancing drugs. Mayweather first requested testing beyond that performed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Pacquiao, who has sued Mayweather for alleged defamation because of statements implying the Filipino star has used those drugs, wouldn't accept a blood test closer than 24 days before the fight. Mayweather wanted the fighters to be subject to blood tests up to 14 days before the fight.

Referring to the Mayweather fight, Arum said that "the horse has left the building." He instead expressed enthusiasm for the fight against Clottey, 32, whom Arum also promotes.

Clottey's most notable victories have come against Zab Judah and Diego Corrales. "It'll be a good test for Manny," said Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach. "A lot of people thought Clottey beat Cotto. This will be a good action fight, just what Manny needs."

Pacquiao was scheduled to arrive in the U.S. on Sunday night, and Roach said they will start training today at Roach's Wild Card Gym in Hollywood.

Arum said seating capacity for the Pacquiao-Clottey bout will be 50,000, creating a unique atmosphere.

Schaefer said that Mayweather is also willing to later fight Pomona's Shane Mosley, a pairing that would conclude years of jawing between the gifted foes who have long been near the top of the world's best-pound-for-pound lists. Mosley is a world welterweight champion, with a title-unification bout against Andre Berto scheduled for Jan. 30 in Las Vegas.

"At 147 pounds, the man to beat is 'Sugar' Shane Mosley," Schaefer said. "Floyd will take that fight and will shut up all those who are saying he's a coward."

PACQUIAO & MAYWEATHER BECOME THE WORST BUSINESSMEN IN BOXING HISTORY!

By Matt Goldstein - The Biggest Money Fight in History Ruined over Stubbornness

There has never been a fight in boxing with so much money involved. There has also never been a fight with so much money involved that has fallen apart. To top it off, the fight was ruined over something that could have been easily negotiated. First, Floyd Mayweather must recognize that drawing blood can deplete an athlete’s energy and the entire body’s utilities. Second, Manny Pacquiao must understand that the amount of blood taken in a drug test is very minimal and the body will most likely not feel any effects, and even if it does, will be fully recovered within a few hours. The amount of blood removed is not the same amount taken when you are donating blood, but actually less than the amount taken when the fighters are tested for HIV and Hepatitis C. For Pacquiao & Mayweather both not to understand these issues is absolutely ridiculous! And for neither fighter to be willing to negotiate between 24 and 14 days for a blood test in order to pull in a possible $40 million each is entirely insane! This is the worst business move in the history of boxing and Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather are the worst businessmen in the history of the sport period. To boot, Pacquiao has signed to fight Joshua Clottey for far less money, but Joshua Clottey is actually an extremely tough fight. I for one would not be shocked Clottey beats Pacquiao convincingly and when the betting lines come out 4-1 in favor of Manny, this writer is putting all of his money on Clottey. It is also shocking that Top Rank is actually risking its cash cow Pacquiao against a guy like Clottey. Granted, Clottey is a Top Rank fighter, but will obviously never generate crossover star power like the Pacman. Now, if Floyd Mayweather wants to save any sort of credibility, he must fight Shane Mosley, which of course will be for much less money than the Pacquiao fight and probably a more difficult fight. The accusations of ducking Antonio Margarito are now coming back to haunt Floyd Mayweather. Even Floyd’s biggest fans are beginning to question his willingness to take on tough opponents. The real Pretty Boy Floyd, a legendary depression era bank robber, is rolling over in his grave! Next time when boxing is trying to negotiate a mega fight that could generate 3 million PPV buys at $60 a piece, instead of calling in a retired judge as a mediator, maybe we should call in Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and Carlos Slim to talk some sense into these intellectual imbeciles of capitalism.

Clottey no joke a live opponent

By Brad Cooney - Now that Floyd Mayweather Jr is no longer in the mix as of right now all eyes turn toward the big, tough, Joshua Clottey. This is by no means a walk in the park for Manny Pacquiao. Clottey is a bull that has a great chin, and can crack. You can ask Antonio Margarito how tough Clottey is. In 2006 Margarito was getting his whole behind kicked up until Clottey injured his hand. It was only then when Margarito was able to survive the rest of the fight and got a gift decision.

Clottey has impressive wins over Zab Judah, and the late Diego "Chico" Corrales. He performed well against Miguel Cotto, coming up a bit short on the cards, yet fought impressively. Joshua is a big strong opponent, one that may be able to walk through Pacquiao's punches. If this happens, it could be an interesting evening. As with most of Pacquiao's opponents, Clottey will probably have trouble dealing with the pound for pound king's speed.

This is an interesting match-up, one that should not be taken lightly by team Pacquiao. The fight will take place at the brand new Cowboy Stadium in Dallas, TX. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones lands a big fight in his new venue after all. KUDOS to Jones for bringing boxing to the big house in Big D.

By taking on big Joshua Clottey, once again Manny Pacquiao demonstrates that he takes on all comers. On the flip side, this is a HUGE opportunity for Joshua Clottey. Can you imagine how his world changes if he messes around and wins this thing? A Clottey victory over the great Manny Pacquiao? Yes, I think it would be safe to say that his world would change immediately.

This fight doesn't have the hype, nor will it sell as many PPV numbers as a Floyd Mayweather fight would but it is certainly a good match up. This is a fight worthy of watching and kudos to Bob Arum for finding a worthy opponent in Joshua Clottey.

President Bush: Everybody wants Pacquiao, not Mayweather

By Michael Marley - Not that Manny Pacquiao promoter and well known Democratic Party backer and liberal leaning Bob Arum is above a bit of puffery but it's interesting to note that Arum claims former President George W. Bush is a Pacman fan.

Let's pick up this tantalizing tidbit as reported by the AP minutes ago (Greg Beacham):

Arum took in the Dallas Cowboys' playoff victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday night, sitting just two seats from former President George W. Bush. Arum said Bush had the same reaction he's heard repeatedly since negotiations with Mayweather bogged down.

"Too bad you didn't get Mayweather, but what difference does it make?" Arum said Bush told him.

"Everybody just wants to see Pacquiao anyway."

I don't see any verification or denial on that coming out of the Bush camp but there may have been some political chatter in the owner's box as the Cowboys hammered the Philadelphia Eagles to move on to another playoff game next Sunday against the tough Vikings.

Right wing windbag Rush Limbaugh was another Jerry Jones guest along with former Raiders head coach and TV analyst John Madden.

Not many people know it but Madden is a huge fight fan who had a syndicate of wealthy backs years ago who hoped to turn national amateur heavyweight champion Emory Chapman professional.

Chapman, son of a Georgia Tech college professor, had little interest in pr boxing. He and I were boxing teammates at the University of Nevada, Reno, and last I heard he became a doctor serving in the U.S. Army in Germany.

No immediate comment from President Obama on the Mayweather-Pacquiao debacle.

Pacquiao wraps up deal for Clottey bout at Cowboys Stadium

By Greg Becham - Manny Pacquiao will fight March 13 at Cowboys Stadium, but not against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum said Sunday he has finalized a deal to match Pacquiao against Joshua Clottey in a welterweight bout at the new $1.2 billion stadium. Arum moved swiftly to land a lucrative fight for his Filipino star after his contentious negotiations for a megafight with Mayweather fell apart in a prolonged dispute over blood testing.

Arum was in Texas over the weekend to wrap up details for the pay-per-view fight, which will be the first boxing match in the stadium. Top Rank spokesman Lee Samuels said the arena will be configured to seat 50,000 fans for the fight, but the capacity could be raised or lowered.

"This stadium has blown me away," Arum told The Associated Press. "It is the most magnificent facility I've ever seen."

Arum took in the Dallas Cowboys' playoff victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday night, sitting just two seats from former President George W. Bush. Arum said Bush had the same reaction he's heard repeatedly since negotiations with Mayweather bogged down

"Too bad you didn't get Mayweather, but what difference does it make?" Arum said Bush told him. "Everybody just wants see Pacquiao anyway."

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones reportedly offered a $25 million site fee for the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, which fell apart over Mayweather's insistence on stringent drug testing and Pacquiao's reluctance to agree. The sides went into mediation to resolve the dispute, but a compromise couldn't be reached.

And though Arum is a longtime New York Giants season ticket-holder, he found common ground with Jones for another major event in the opulent new stadium.

"This is a competitive fight, as competitive as the Cotto fight going in," Arum said. "We got a tremendous deal at the site. It's a big event, and I think we'll do unbelievable."

Although Mayweather's representatives still were holding out hope the Pacquiao fight could be salvaged, Mayweather also is expected to fight March 13 at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, which would have been the site of his bout with Pacquiao. Paulie Malignaggi has been the most popular contender for that fight.

Although Clottey has no fraction of Mayweather's fame, he's a worthy welterweight opponent for Pacquiao, widely considered the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world. The hard-hitting Clottey (35-3, 20 KOs), a native of Ghana who lives in New York, is coming off a split-decision loss to Miguel Cotto last June, a fight that some felt Clottey won.

Cotto went on to take a thrashing from Pacquiao in November, losing when the fight was stopped in the final round.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH MICHAEL MOORER: No dirt, only respect for Manny Pacquiao

By Michael Marley - Manny Pacquiao isn’t the only boxing personality who feels his name has been slandered and defamed.

I just spoke to former Coach Freddie Roach assistant trainer and former light heavyweight and world heavyweight champion Michael Moorer and he told me all the chat and comment room Internet rumors and innuendo that he shoveled any drug use dirt on the Pinoy Idol is total garbage.

Moorer made it plain that he’s no snitch in the first place and, in the second place, he has nothing illegal to report on concerning Pacman.

The slugging southpaw, now living in the Miami area and training fighters for Chris Lawrence and his new Heavyweight Factory operation, said he spoke with his own ex-trainer and ESPN commentator Teddy Atlas just before Atlas went on the air Friday night to repeat allegations that the Pacquiao camp hoped to hide any “dirty” drug test that might arise in connection with a Floyd Mayweather Jr. bout.

“I spoke to Teddy the other day,” Moorer said by telephone, “and I told him that Manny Pacquiao is clean, that he trains like an animal like I did when I was fighting and that he trains so hard that the training is hard but the fights become easy.

“Manny loves to train, Manny loves boxing. It’s nothing for Manny to get on the pads and go 26 rounds nonstop.”

Moorer believes there may be something to persistent rumors that someone in the Mayweather camp, maybe Floyd himself, has cited him as the source of “Manny cheats” stories.

“I don’t know the Mayweathers, really. But Floyd likes to play games, mind games with people, we all know that. If anyone wants to come talk to me, come man to man, because I am not hard to find. My heart pumps no fear for no man. I didn’t tell anyone named Mayweather anything.

“I told Teddy I don’t like people slandering me and defaming my character,” Moorer said. “I told Teddy what I tell everybody, that Manny is a workaholic in the gym. He handles boxing like it should be handled.”

Moorer said these “false accusations” attributed to him may be caused because some people think he disgruntled, upset at both Roach and Pacquiao because of his brief employment in their camp.

“I’ve got four kids here in Florida” Moorer said. “I was away from home a long time. I’ve got nothing but the utmost respect for Freddie, for Manny or for anyone else in Manny’s camp. I am not bitter at Freddie, Manny or anyone else.”

I asked if that included agent Michael Koncz who is said to have not gotten along with the ex-champion.

“With Mike, well we talked. He respected me as Freddie’s assistant and we rapped real good, I think.”

I asked Moorer what Atlas said about his feelings of being falsely accused and maligned.

“I told him, that (snitching) is not my style, not my character and Teddy said, ‘If you didn’t do anything then don’t worry about anything.’”

I am glad to be able to clear the air for the unjustly accused Moorer.

Pac-Man is now “Superman” as he heads into the Clottey Challenge

By Albert Alvarez - As soon as the Mega Fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather was called off, I always knew that Pacquiao and his team would be the ones to take on a tougher challenge.

I just never thought that the tough challenge would come in the form of Joshua Clottey. Pac-Man facing Clottey came out of left field for me.

I guess once the Pacquiao/Mayweather clash was scratched, many fans wondered how would both Pacquiao and Mayweather repay us for not inking the biggest fight in history. Some asked, who out of the two will step up and give us a tough exciting fight to look forward to?

My way of thinking is that it’s not really a question when you already know the answer. Now more than ever Mayweather must look towards a Mosley, Malignaggi or even Bradley and not a Matty Hatton. Floyd versus Matt Hatton is a boxing clinic . Mayweather versus Mosley would be a clash skilled boxing titans and Mayweather vs Malignaggi is a high speed chess match.

A match with Mosley would silient the Mayweather critics who always say that he avoids the tough challenges and picks on smaller foes. First as we know Mosley needs to get by Berto on January 30th.

As for Malignaggi, he would not only match Floyd in the talk department, by talking up the fight, but Malignaggi can also match Floyd’s speed. I have always felt that speed and a good consistent jab troubles Floyd. Well guess what? Paulie has blazing speed and a jab that shoots out like a lazer that keeps sticking you.

So come on here Floyd, do the right thing. We don’t want to see another Mayweather/Baldomir, a boring ass clinic. I know that you love the UK because they seem to be the only country that loves you, ok I get that, but Matt Hatton? Are you serious? Heck, Kell Brook who is still a little green would give you a better test than Matty Hatton.

Floyd, you have done this to yourself, you built up this flossy undefeated record to claim the Kingdom but all that flossy record has ever done in return is to be used against you. You painted a mesmerizing painting and some of the public bought it, but once you lose your mean streak and get a blemish or get yourself Roy Jonesed, the art gallery will come to a close. So if you lose the fans you do have off of one blemish, were they even your fans in the first place? It won’t be until your true test or first loss that you then will gain real fans. Because by then, all will come to light and they will see what you are really made of. Imagine that, a gain from a loss.

Now back to Pacquiao. I can not even begin to even guess what Arum and the boys were thinking in this one. Why would you risk thier#1 fighter against a tough iron chined warrior like Clottey? I mean why risk your Golden ticket against a fighter that is not much of a draw, and not a highly marketable fighter?

I am not saying that Clottey will destroy the Pac-Man, but I’m also not gonna say that the Pac-Man will destroy Clottey as he did Cotto, De La Hoya, and Diaz. Maybe Arum and the boys just wanted to keep all the money in-house with 2 Top Rank fighters, or maybe they simply feel that the Pacquiao is now Superman, no man can defeat Superman.

What’s also bugging me is that Arum wants to try to place this fight in the new massive Dallas Cowboys Stadium. In no way shape or form does Pacquiao/Clottey belong in Texas. Pacquiao/Clottey would be much better at the Garden, Madison Square Garden. Clottey has a following there and you can build it up as you bringing this Godzilla like Monster to the Big Apple to take a bite out of the Big Apple. Whatever happens, let’s just get the show on the road.

Touchdown, Cowboys: Jerrry Jones confirms Manny Pacquiao fight

By Michael Marley - God may have rested on the seventh day but Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones doesn’t.

I just got off the phone, after a handoff by Manny Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum to the Head Cowboy, and Jones confirmed enthusiastically what Arum had just said, that they have concluded everything except writing up the contracts for Pacman to defend his WBO and WBC welterweight titles on March 13 in Arlington, TX., against rugged Ghanaian Joshua Clottey.

Jones could hardly contain his excitement after a whirlwind 48 hour period in which his ‘Boys crushed the Philadelphia Eagles with former President George W. Bush, conservative radio superstar Rush Limbaugh and Arum as his personal guests in the owner’s suites at the sparkling new stadium.

If that Saturday night success wasn’t enough for one weekend, Jones then brunched with Arum and his stepson, Top Rank president Todd duBoef, to put the finishing touches on the deal for the Pinoy Idol’s next fight.

All this was going on while, meanwhile back in Los Angeles, disappointed Floyd Mayweather Jr., rep Richard Schaefer was telling the LA Times that “At 147 pounds, the man to beat is Sugar Shane Mosley. Floyd will take that fight and shut up all those who are saying he is a coward."

“I can confirm to you,” Jones told Examiner.con and Boxingconfidential, “that we have a deal. Bob and I just shook hands on it. We are moving foreward on this right now.

“I’ve always had great respect for Bob, he is a peer of mine. He’s been one of the greatest promoters in the sport of boxing. And I think it’s excellent that we’re now teaming up with him on this great promotion.”

Jones heaped praise on Pacquiao and said he is just as impressed with Megamanny’s character as he is his ring skills.

“He’s an outstanding fighter, no make that a once in a lifetime fighter,” Jones said. “You know we have so many great athletes in the NFL but he’s like some of our athletes who do so much away from the field.

“He’s more than a credit to his sport. I am just so impressed by him and by what he means, what he represents to his country and by what he has accomplished. There is something very special about Manny Pacquiao, that’s for sure. Manny uses his (athletic) gifts in a very admirable way and that is so important.”

Years ago, before he purchased the Dallas franchise, Jones promoted a boxing show in his native Arkansas. He’s certainly taken a quantum leap with this show which will probably include a second Top Rank card the night before the Pacman card and may feature returning Mexican superstar Antonio Margarito in a co-featured bout in the huge stadium.

Obviously, having a Mexican lure will bolster the live gate and Jones said he’s quite aware of that.

“I will tell you something,” Jones said, “because of all our great Hispanic fans, especially the Mexican fans for our football team, I almost named the stadium Vaqueros de Dallas to honor their heritage.

“The bottom line is we will do all we can to have a boxing show which will excite and invite our Mexican fan base.”

Jones told me they plan a Dallas press conference January 18 and will probably add a presser in New York “as well” to properly trumpet the big show.

Pacquiao vs Clottey Finalized: Cowboys Stadium, Full Details

By Rick Reeno - BoxingScene.com spoke with a very excited Bob Arum [CEO for Top Rank] on Sunday afternoon. Arum just closed a deal with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to stage Manny Pacquiao's defense of the WBO welterweight title against Joshua Clottey at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas on March 13. Arum and Top Rank president Todd duBoef flew to Texas on Saturday to meet with Jones. They sat and watched the Cowboys' big win over the Eagles. They plan to scale the venue for a crowd of 50,000 fans.

"We have deal for March 13. Rick, I have to tell you something - this place blew me away. It was the greatest place that I've ever been to. This boxing event will be so memorable for the fans and this not a normal stadium. It's hard to picture it unless you come here and see it for yourself with all of the electronics and the big screens," Arum said to BoxingScene.

There is still no word on HBO's involvement with the pay-per-view. Arum would like to get HBO on board, but he plans to move forward either way.

"We've been with them for a long time and if they want to participate that's fine, but if they don't we have major media companies that are ready to jump on board especially with the Cowboys and everything else," Arum said.

A two day press tour is already in play. Pacquiao-Clottey will have the kick-off press conference on January 18 in Dallas and the next stop on the tour will be in New York on the 19th. He plans to pack the undercard with Hispanic talent. Former welterweight champion Antonio Margarito is one of the fighters they are planning to put on the show. A three fight undercard is being put together for the pay-per-view.

"We're looking to put a lot of Hispanic fighters on the card. Margarito is one of them. I've already spoken with Dickie Cole [Texas Athletic Commission] on when he can apply [for a license]. Roberto Marroquin will definitely be on the show. They love him out here. And Bruce [Top Rank's head matchmaker] will put together some more matches," Arum said.

"There will be three fights underneath Pacquiao vs. Clottey. A press conference is scheduled for the 18th in Dallas and a New York press conference on the 19th. And as part of the deal we made with Jerry, is for them [Cowboys organization] to be involved."
